UAE calls for destruction of chemical weapons worldwide

The United Arab Emirates has urged destruction of declared chemical weapons stockpiles worldwide within the established deadline on April 29th, 2007 to maintain global peace and security and to combat terrorism in all its forms.

This came during a speech given yesterday by Foreign Ministry's Assistant Undersecretary Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jarmen before the 11th session of the Conference of the States Parties Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), currently held in The Hague.

Al Jarmen congratulated Alfonso M. Dastis, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Spain to the OPCW, who was unanimously elected as the new Chairman for the Conference. He also thanked the former Chairman Jose Antonio for the efforts made under his presidency.

"It has been ten years since Chemical Weapons Convention entered into force. Though relatively short, this 10-year period has witnessed a great progress as member states grew to 118. We, therefore, call for guaranteeing universality of the convention by urging the countries who are not signatory, especially in the Middle East, to join," Al Jarmen said.

He also reiterated UAE's call to fight terrorism in all its forms by showing commitment to the convention. Al Jarmen said that out of its commitment to the convention, the UAE has enacted federal law no. 40 for 2006 pertaining to prohibition of production, storage and use of chemical weapons. He also referred to the country's active participation in the regional workshops and seminars on prohibition of chemical weapons. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
