The UAE has reiterated the importance of increased coordination at various levels between the member countries of the GCC to help achieve the long-desired goal of economic integration in the region.

The UAE's comments came within the framework of the 24th meeting of the GCC Ministerial Committee for Planning and Development, held in Kuwait on 20th of May. Led by Mohammed Abdul Aziz Al Shehhi, Undersecretary for Ministry of Economy, the UAE delegation included Tariq Al Marzouqi, Director, Government Communications, and Nada Al Hashimi, Director, Planning and Support, both from the Ministry of Economy.

Addressing the meeting, Mohammed Ahmed Al Shehhi said that coordination in planning among the GCC member countries should be accelerated to keep pace with the resurgent economic needs, rising population and the increasing number of projects under development. He also reiterated the UAE's priority in achieving sustainable development across all operations and initiatives.

Al Shehhi said: "Coordination in all our planning initiatives must be aligned to the vision for sustainable development that has been articulated by most of the GCC countries. Concerted efforts to achieve this priority will eventually lead to the desired economic integration to the ultimate benefit of the people of the GCC." The Undersecretary also outlined the UAE's significant achievements in sustainable development that have enabled the country to advance up the ranks in the critical domains of international human development and global competitiveness.

Al Shehhi said: "Such achievements were made possible only with the valuable support and leadership of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai." During the meeting a proposal was made by the Kuwaiti Minister of Planning and Development Affairs, Her Excellency Hind Alsubaih to establish a pan Gulf research centre for planning and development. The committee agreed to study the proposal and explore its logistics and feasibility with inputs from all the GCC members.

The meeting focused on the development strategy for the GCC, primarily a General Secretariat memo on the vision of some regional and international organisations pertaining to Millennium Development Goals post 2015. The MDGs include achieving water security, food security, effective healthcare, a qualitative education system, creating sustainable job opportunities, gender equality and youth empowerment, besides developing energy-efficient supplies and preserving ecological systems. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
