New York - The UAE called on the international community to mobilise information technology and communications (ICT) to serve development goals in developing countries and double international efforts in this respect to achieve best results.

'Bridging the digital divide between advanced and developing nations will tremendously contribute to laying down solid foundations for true partnership and cooperation in development fields and achieve security, stability and prosperity for nations of the world, said Mohammed Mubarak Al Khaili, member of the UAE permanent delegation to the UN before the General Assembly's committee on ICT and development.

He also called for implementing recommendations issued by various UN and other relevant international conferences on ICT which stressed the need for providing those countries with financial and technological resources so as to build their infrastructure and train human capital so to serve development goals.

Speaking about the UAE efforts on ICT, Al Khalil told the UN meeting that the UAE had adopted a higher policy aimed at putting the ICT sector at the disposal of development. A US$ 45 million fund, the first of its kind in MENA, was established to develop the ICT sector.' 'The UAE legislations guarantee freedom of flow of information and provision of sources of culture and knowledge via various channels of media and communications with respect to individuals and their dignity and without upsetting principled religious and political values,' he added.

This open environment, he noted, had helped the ICT industry to flourish, making the UAE a world class centre for hosting global ICT and media corporations, and a hub for conferences, exhibitions and festivals. He disclosed that the UAE will host during this month two major world ICT events : the conference on third generations of mobile telecommunications in the Middle East and the Fifth Middle East conference of IT security.
