Mohammed Jassim Al Samhan, the UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN and Chairman of the Arab Group to the UN for this month, called upon the UN Security Council the need for holding an urgent convention to reconsider the draft law submitted by the Group of Non-aligned countries in December last year.

The draft law calls for establishment and deployment of a UN military and police force in the Palestinian occupied territories including Jerusalem, to provide prompt protection for the Palestinians. These remarks were made by Al Samhan during his meeting with the Chairman of the Security Council for this month, who is the former Ukranian Foreign Minister for Middle East Affairs.

The meeting which was attended by Nasser Al Qodwah, the Palestinian Permanent Observer to the UN, discussed the latest developments witnessed in the occupied Palestinian territories, including escalation of violence, oppression and occupation practices, blockade and collective punishment practiced by the Israeli troops against the unarmed Palestinian people inside their occupied territories.

Al Samhan informed the Chairman of the Council of the intention of the Arab Group to the UN to move with effect from next week to demand an urgent official session of the Security Council to discuss developments related to the serious situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, including Jerusalem. On his part, the Chairman of the council displayed understanding of the issue and welcomed the Arab move inside the UN, which aims to activate the role of the Security Council for providing protection to the Palestinians against continuous Israeli oppression.
