UAE calls for reconsideration of biased policies by western states

The UAE last night called on western countries to reconsider their biased policies towards issues and crises of the Arab nations and the Islamic world and urged them to adopt necessary measures to tackle daily practises of aggression, instigation and discrimination against Arabs and Muslims in their countries. In a statement at the U.N. General Assembly's session dedicated to discuss the issue of dialogue among civilisations, Abdul Aziz bin Nasser Al Shamsi, the UAE's Permanent representative to the United Nations, clarified the UAE stance towards the issue of dialogue between the civilisations, the current incidents of terrorism and the situation of instability in the world. "Despite the announcement of year 2001 as the United Nations year for dialogue among civilisations and despite the agreement of world leaders and governments at the millennium conference last year to commit themselves to development of peace and the culture of dialogue between civilisations in a bid to overcome differences and conflicts which separate nations and peoples, we were surprised with the emergence of enemies of this dialogue this year who kill ideas of this project by intensifying organised terrorist acts against innocents which was embodied in the incidents of September 11 and the state terrorism which is based on occupation, racial discrimination as well as religious extremism which lead to destruction such as the daily suffering of the Palestinian people on their land by Israel.” Al Shamsi said.

Al Shamsi reiterated the importance of dialogue between civilisations due to increase in various forms of terrorism such as armed conflicts, violence, armaments race between countries, human rights violations, the spread of organised crime beyond borders and drugs. He added that dialogue of civilisations should contribute side by side with political and diplomatic efforts in spreading the best human practises based on forgiveness and solidarity against all kinds of extremism, human discrimination and hatred. Al Shamsi strongly condemned the campaign of aggression and discrimination carried out by a number of western and Zionist media institutions to distort the image of Arabs and Muslims. He pointed out that terrorist operations and race elimination practises as well as other major violations of human rights witnessed in various parts of the world in the last few years, proved that the suspects were not from one nationality, religion or race but represented different politics, religions and races. He warned in this regard the continuation of such anti- Arab and Muslim campaigns which provide a basic source to spread hatred and discrimination between peoples and civilisations. In his statement, Al Shamsi also dealt with the subject of globalisation and its relations with the issue of dialogue between civilisations and warned against the hegemony of developed countries' ideologies. On the role played by the UAE to enhance dialogue between civilisations, Al Shamsi said that the UAE had always been keen to draw up various legislations, laws and educational and cultural programmes to strengthen the human and moral values among its people based on the respect of traditions and believes of other peoples. He added that the UAE's policy is based on the Arab traditions, the holy Quran's teachings and Islamic culture which calls for tolerance, forgiveness, solidarity and cultural respect for other peoples. He also praised the UAE government which signed a number of agreements on the exchange of information, culture and education with other countries worldwide and for participating in various intellectual, art and philosophical conferences and forums which contributed in enriching the country's interaction and cooperation with peoples of other civilisations.
