UAE calls on Human Rights Council to act against Israel on human rights violations

Geneva - The UAE Permanent Representative to the European headquarters of the United Nations (UN) in Geneva, Obaid Salem Al Za'abi has said that our relationship with the Human Rights Council is based primarily on the principle of cooperation and to deal honestly and transparently with the Commission in accordance with articles 104 and 105 of the UN Charter.

He pointed out that any breach of these articles would hamper the Council's efforts to put an end to the expansion of Israeli settlements, especially in East Jerusalem and the consequences of the Israeli siege imposed on the Gaza Strip and the treatment of Palestinian children detained by Israeli authorities.

Al Za'abi, in his speech during the sixteenth session of the Human Rights Council to discuss the seventh item on the agenda of the session on human rights in Palestine and other occupied Arab territories, welcomed the report submitted by Richard Falk, as United Nations Special Rapporteur for Human Rights on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories since 1967. He expressed appreciation for the spirit of responsibility and professional excellence of Richard Falk, stressing the UAE's support in his noble mission.

He regretted the lack of success of the repeated efforts of the Special Rapporteur to turn the attention of the Human Rights Council and the General Assembly of the United Nations towards the situation witnessed in the occupied Palestinian territories.

He called on the Human Rights Council to the need for firmness and exhaust all means conferred upon it to secure the cooperation of Israel with the mechanisms of human rights in particular and the rest of the other UN mechanisms in general.

UAE envoy also called on the Council to adopt all recommendations contained in the report of the Special Rapporteur and to take necessary measures to ensure its implementation, especially ending the Israeli occupation, restore full sovereignty of Palestinian people over their territory and establish their independent state with its capital, Jerusalem. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
