The UAE has called on Iran to comply with the UN resolution 1737 and thereby avert further tensions in the region. The UN Security Council Resolution 1737 calls on Iran to suspend sensitive nuclear activities, including enrichment-related and reprocessing activities. The suspension of such activities should be verified by the IAEA.

According to the resolution that was sponsored by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, work on all heavy water-related projects - including the construction of a research reactor moderated by heavy water -should be suspended.

The UAE's position was made by Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed during a meeting here Wednesday with the British Foreign Secretary Margaret Beckett. During the meeting, Sheikh Abdullah and his British counterpart conferred on the security and stability of the region, including latest developments in Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon.

On Iraq, Sheikh Abdullah stressed the need to fully implement the current security plan, but added that this must go side by side with an inclusive and constructive national dialogue. "There is also a need disarm all militias. It is only the armed forces and the police which must carry arms. These armed forces must also be purged of elements implicated in crimes", said Sheikh Abdullah.

The Minister also called for the implementation of UN Resolution 1701, calling on Israel to quit Shabaa farm in South Lebanon.

Sheikh Abdullah and Secretary Beckett also touched on bilateral cooperation, and further stressed the need to enhance trade exchange. In order to achieve this goal, they said, the GCC and the EU must expedite the free trade agreement talks. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
