The United Arab Emirates has called on the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) member states to close ranks and pursue an orchestrated approach during the current discussions on UN reforms.

"We also affirm that the UN reforms will not be successful without making effective and real improvements in the working methods of the organisation, in order to enhance its impact on the lives of people, especially in the developing countries," said Saif Saeed bin Saed, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in an interposition before the Annual Meeting of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the NAM, on the sidelines of the 59th Session of the General Assembly of the United Nations.

The subject discussion was "Reforming the United Nations to meet global threats and challenges in the 21st century." Saed pointed out that the Movement is required to strengthen its participation in the process of deciding the benchmarks of the UN reform process and revitalization of its activities, in order to ensure its effective involvement in the international decision-making process, and in drawing up the international programs and plans of development.

He said the UN reforms "requires, first and foremost, strengthening the standing of the organization, upholding its purposes and principals, balancing the rules of its main organs, namely, the Security Council and the General Assembly, in order to promote their mandates in the fields of settlement of disputes, maintenance of international peace and security, and achievement of economic and social development, and to enhance the credibility of their resolutions."

"We also stress the importance of following a cohesive and co-coordinated approach by the Movement during the current discussions on UN reforms, in order to ensure the implementation of the required reforms through an integrated framework, based on the principals of transparency, accountability, equality among countries and equitable geographic distribution, and to correct the present imbalances in the international decision-making process," he suggested.
