Communications Minister Ahmed Humaid Al Tayer has conveyed to the Japanese government the desire of the UAE national carriers, namely Emirates and Al Etihad airlines, to increase their flights to Japan. The request came as the opportunities of transporting of passengers and goods to and fro Japan are on the rise with the number of passengers between the two countries reaching 70,000 last year.

Al Tayer conveyed the carriers' desire to Japanese Land, Infrastructure and Transport Minister Nobuteru Ishihara when they met here this morning. The two Ministers discussed bilateral relations and underlined the need to build on them in the fields of communications and transport.

Al Tayer told Ishihara that the UAE is strategically placed to play a prominent role in trade, transport and tourism in the region, thanks to its modern infrastructure. He said air transport between Japan and UAE had increased considerably ever since the launch of flights between them.

He added that both sides have agreed to embark, in the next six months, on extensive negotiations on the possibility of increasing flights between the two countries. "The Japanese Minister has demonstrated full understanding and desire to boost cooperation with the UAE since he and other Japanese officials have become cognizant of available resources in our country, particularly in regard to Iraq reconstruction projects", Al Tayer opined.
