The Hague - The UAE has reiterated its full adherence to the Convention on the Prohibition of the Development, Production, Stockpiling and Use of Chemical Weapons. UAE Ambassador to the Netherlands Ali Thani Al Suwaidi has called on all signatories of the accord to honour their obligations in order to promote international peace and security. Al Suwaidi, who is also the UAE Permanent Representative to the Organisation for Prohibition of Chemicals Weapons, yesterday updated the organisation on measures adopted by the UAE in adherence to the agreement.

"The UAE has issued federal law number 40 for 2006 prohibiting processing, production, storage and usage of chemical weapons. That law has specified the prohibited chemicals under the Agreement and spelled out penalties applicable to violators," he said.

Addressing the Oragnisation's 12th conference on Tuesday, Al Suwaidi said the UAE had issued multiple entry visas to the Oragnisation's inspectors, in implementation of clause 10, part 2 of the Agreement. He further pointed out that the UAE had participated in several regional forums organised in collaboration with the Organisation's Technical Secretariat, with the aim of bolstering regional cooperation.

Al Suwaidi underscored the need for implementation of recommendations of the previous conferences in favour of boosting cooperation toward using chemistry for peaceful purposes. He called for removal of all restrictions impeding the transfer of technology and knowledge for development of chemical industries for peaceful purposes. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
