Paris: The UAE is viewing the increasing nuclear capability among countries in the Middle East with grave concern. "The presence of nuclear capabilities in the Middle East region is harmful," General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, said in a statement after meeting President Jacques Chirac of France at the Elysée Palace on Friday.

"We are against Iran acquiring that capability. The presence of such power in the region is not useful," he added.

"Any nuclear programme will pose a threat to the Gulf region," Sheikh Mohammad said, in response to a query about the threat of Iran's nuclear program-me to the Arabian Gulf.

Sheikh Mohammad said his talks with President Chirac also covered developments in the region, including the situations in Iraq and Lebanon. "The two countries share identical views on the current developments in the region. France has a great role to play in the Middle East and we support this role," he added.

Sheikh Mohammad described ties between the UAE and France as "strong", adding that talks were underway to bolster economic cooperation between the two countries.

An Elysée spokesman said President Chirac had reiterated France's friendship with the UAE Government at the talks with Sheikh Mohammad. The spokesman said President Chirac had briefed Sheikh Mohammad on efforts by France, Germany and Britain regarding Iran.

According to the spokes-man, Chirac said that the UAE and France maintain special political, economic and cultural relations. The French president praised the UAE's rapid economic progress and hoped French companies would keep abreast of such development, especially in infrastructure projects. He added that the talks also touched on Syria and Lebanon. The spokesman said Chirac emphasised that the goal of Paris and the UN is to enable Lebanon to restore its security and stability and highlight aspects of the killing of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri.

The two sides also shared identical views on this issue, the spokesman added. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
