A delegation from the UAE headed by Ahmed Butti Ahmed, Executive Chairman of Ports, Customs and Free Zone Corporation and Director General of Dubai Customs, visited the USA in response to the US Customs and Border Protection invitation.
The visit is aimed at exchanging expertise and knowledge between the two countries in the field of controlling exports and learning about the adopted procedures of combating counterfeited and prohibited goods.
During the recent visit, both sides agreed on supporting the exchange of customs information between the two countries with regards to enforcing control on exports and cargos as well as exchanging lists of the goods which are subject to tightened monitoring and control in the field of advanced technology. They also agreed to conduct specialised courses in the field of targeting cargos and analysing information besides making field visits to exchange expertise.
Moreover, discussions were made on signing a memorandum for exchanging expertise and information in the customs intelligence domain between Dubai Customs and the respective US authorities.
The UAE delegation had a meeting with the upper management of the US CBP Department to get acquainted with the available systems and machines there. The delegation also visited the Cargo Centre in Virginia State and was introduced to the department's efforts in ensuring safety of goods flow between both countries.
Trade relations between the UAE and the USA have been constantly growing. The value of direct trade exchanges between both countries went up by 7.27% to Dh18.4 billion during the first seven months of this year. Statistics issued by Dubai Customs for January-July, 2010 period reveals a great growth in the Dubai exports to the USA by over 50% as compared to the same period of last year which amounted to Dh504 million this year as opposed to Dh335 million.
Imports had the largest share in the aggregate trade exchange between Dubai and the USA this year with Dh16.6 billion and 8.81% of increase rate for the same period of 2009. Vehicles used for transporting people topped Dubai imports list from the USA with 11.19%, turbines of different kinds came second place with 10.42% then aero planes, helicopters and satellites with 10.36%.
It is worth mentioning that there are 290 American companies in Jebel Ali Free Zone. There are also 1100 American companies in Dubai which are registered with Dubai Chamber of Commerce and Industry. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
