Beirut - The UAE Project for Support and Reconstruction of Lebanon announced Tuesday the arrival of the fifth team of UAE Armed Forces explosives engineers here to take part in the operation launched by President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to demine the south of Lebanon from Unexploded Ordnance (UXO).

A press release issued by the project said the new batch will join about 30 teams of experts who are currently operating under the Operation Emirates Solidarity (OSE) to clear 4 million square metres in south Lebanon from UXO in 272 minefields and 156 traps. Studies conducted by the UAE Armed Forces in coordination with the Lebanese Army and UN Mine Action Coordination Centre expect the teams to clear the remaining areas between Litani River and Gezin, Nabatiya and Hasbiya by the end of the current year.

Around 580 square kilometres south of Litani River will be re-cleared from UXO left by the last Israel aggression on Lebanon. The current operation is an extension of the work ordered by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan between 2002-2004. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
