NEW YORK: The UAE delegation has concluded its participation at the three-day United Nations Sustainable Development Summit 2015. Organised by the UN General Assembly from 25th to 27th September 2015, in New York, the summit adopted the post-2015 development agenda. The UAE's participation at the summit meetings came on the side-lines of the 70th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

The summit was one of the most important event held by the UN in the sustainable development. For the next decade and a half, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will guide the overarching work of all Governments, aid providers, UN entities and third parties such as the civil society and private sector. Designed to comprehensively address an interconnected range of issues, these new Goals are set to facilitate collective action within the coming decade and a half for a shared future.

During the Summit, the UAE reviewed its relentless efforts and contributions in various areas of sustainable development, as well as the implementation of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

The UAE participating delegation, in the presence of Sheikha Lubna bint Khalid Al Qasimi, Minister of International Cooperation and Development (MICAD) and Head of the UAE Committee for the Coordination of Humanitarian Foreign Aid, has succeeded in shedding the light on the UAE's international commitment in which it pledged to "leave no one behind and to shift the world on to a sustainable and resilient path'.

The delegation also highlighted the UAE's role played to support sustainable development goals, especially in gender equality and sustainable energy fields, and its commitment to accomplish those objectives at the local level, as well as adapting its programmes to the country's foreign aid, in which, the UAE was ranked first for the second year in a row with those of sustainable development goals.

The UAE's participation in the Summit aimed to confirm the UAE's pivotal role and its relentless efforts to address urgent global issues including food security, climate change, water scarcity and infrastructure development in line with the country's commitment to supporting the UN in its efforts to achieve the Millennium Development Goals by 2015.

The new framework, Transforming Our World: the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, is composed of 17 goals and 169 targets to wipe out poverty, fight inequality and tackle climate change over the next 15 years.

In support of the summit, the UAE hosted four events on impact of climate on Small Island Developing States (SIDS), women and sustainability, investment in clean energy and using aid to attracting private sector. – Emirates News Agency, WAM -http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395286146026.html
