UAE deminers of the UAE-sponsored US$50 million Operation Emirates Solidarity (OES) visited last Thursday the Tyre-based Mine Action Coordination Centre (MACC) to discuss progress of the demining project. The team, led by Colonel Juma Al Junaibi, met Colonel Qasim Jamoul, commander of the Lebanese team at MACC and Chris Clark, UN Programme officers at MACC.

The meeting reviewed progress of work on phase 111 of the project. Junaibi said over 62,000 unexploded mines and ordnance (UXO) were demined and cleared in 92 villages with total cleared areas of 5 million square metres. 'The initiative is a clear sign of Sheikh Zayed's support for the people of Lebanon,' he added. He praised the heroic sacrifices of the people of south Lebanon and their warm reception to the UAE team. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
