The UAE military team in Lebanon yesterday handed over another 400,000 square meters of land to the Lebanese Authorities after clearing 16000 mines. Major Abdullah Al Shamsi, Commander of the UAE Armed Forces' fifth contingent, said that the UAE-Lebanese Solidarity Project was a real translation of the humanitarian stances of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, expressing the determination of the UAE to continue the demining work until all mines were cleared.

Talking at a ceremony held on the occasion, Shamsi said that the third phase of the project was coming to an end by the end of 2003. Brigadier Qasim Jumoul, who represented the Lebanese Army at the ceremony, hailed Sheikh Zayed for his humanitarian initiative, which he said had returned the land to its rightful owners after they had been deprived from it for a long time. He said the UAE team had managed to clear mines from 123 villages in the first two phases of the project. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
