New York - United Arab Emirates deposited yesterday with the United Nations the document of its ratification of the 'Comprehensive and Integral International Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Rights and Dignity of Persons with Disabilities'.
The instrument of ratification signed by Foreign Minister HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan was submitted formally by UAE's Permanent Representative to UN Ambassador Ahmad Abdul Rahman Al Jarman to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon yesterday for depositing it with the UN. It noted that the UAE ratified the Convention after its examination and undertakes to remain sincerely committed to its provisions as well as its implementation.
It was in May last year UAE had signed the Convention, which came into force on May 12, 2008.
The Convention obliges the States Parties to take all legislative measures to ensure the full and equal enjoyment by the people with disability of all their human rights and fundamental freedoms without any form of discrimination, especially women and girls with disabilities.
The purpose of the Convention is to promote, protect and ensure the full and equal enjoyment of all human rights and fundamental freedoms by all persons with disabilities, and to promote respect for their inherent dignity. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
