UAE divers help clean beaches

Children on a Malaysian resort island were recently taught how to look after their environment by a group of environmentalists and diving enthusiasts based in the UAE. About 50 children from the island of Mabul, worked side-byside with the 19 volunteers from the Emirates Diving Organisation, to gather dozens of bags of litter from the island's beaches.

"The litter collection was to teach the children to take care of their environment… we are hoping they will continue what we started,” the 34-year-old volunteer said. "We bought them notebooks, sweets and things to eat to encourage them,” Abbas said. This is her second overseas clean-up mission, the first being a trip to Thailand, where she helped clear debris from the 2004 tsunami.

"We wanted to go and see what other governments are doing to protect the environment, and the good thing is that the local people and business support the initiative,” said Ibrahim Ibrahim Al Zu'bi, director of the environment department at Emirates Diving Association, which organised the trip. "It was inspiring,” said Al Zu'bi, adding that he will lobby the UAE Government for more marine reserves. (Emirates Today)
