The UAE was yesterday elected member of the Intergovernmental Council of the International Hydrological Programme (IHP) by member states of the United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

The UAE election to the IHP's four-year membership took place during the final session of the UNESCO's 34th conference yesterday. The aim of IHP is to improve the scientific and technological basis on which to build sound managing methods for water resources, respectful of the environment. The main objectives of the IHP are: - to provide a scientific framework for general development of hydrological activities; - to improve the study of the hydrological cycle and the scientific methodology for the assessment of water resources; - to assist Member States in the organization and development of their national hydrologic activities.

The UAE delegation to the conference included two professors from the UAE University, Dr. Ahmed Murd, Head of the Geology Department and Dr. Mohammed Al Baili of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences. Dr. Murad took part in the works of the Commission on Natural Sciences while Dr. Al Baili participated in the sessions of the Commission on the Social and Human Sciences. Both committees adopted programmes and budgets for 2008-2009. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
