UAE embassies in various parts of the world continue to celebrate the 31st anniversary of the country's National Day, which fell on December 2. In Washington, the UAE Ambassador to the United States, Al Asri Saeed Al Dhahiri, held at the Embassy last night a reception, which was attended by senior US officials, heads of diplomatic missions, business tycoons, senior officials from the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank, as well as heads of the Arab-American organisations.

The reception seized the opportunity to highlight on Dubai's preparations to successfully host next year the annual meeting of the governors of the World Bank and the IMF in September 2003. It also showcased the comprehensive development achieved in the UAE under the leadership of President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

In a keynote address, Al Dhahiri said that December2 will always be remembered by the people of the UAE, being the most significant landmark in the history of the country and its people. He attributed the security, stability and comfort being enjoyed by the country and its people to the wise leadership and genuine efforts of Sheikh Zayed.

In Tokyo, the UAE Ambassador to Japan, Ahmed Ali Al Mualla, also held a reception last night to mark the occasion. The reception, which was attended by a large number of senior Japanese officials, including the former Japanese Prime Minister, Riotaro Hashimoto and some Japanese ministers, reflects the depth of relations between the UAE and Japan. Also in attendance were heads of the diplomatic missions, members of the UAE-Japan Friendship Society and heads of oil and gas companies.

A fair, which was held on the fringe of the reception to enlighten the gathering about the heritage, tradition and culture of the UAE, including Arab Gulf delicacies, won the appreciation of the guests, who also showed appreciation for the achievements of the UAE.

In Ottawa, UAE Ambassador to Canada Hassan Mohammed Obeid Al Suwaidi held a similar function on the occasion which was attended by a number of high ranking Canadian officials, Secretary of State for Central and Eastern Europe and Middle East Gar Knutson.
