New York - The United Arab Emirates and Antigua and Barbuda signed yesterday a joint statement to establish diplomatic ties at ambassadorial level with effect from May 4. UAE's Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Abdul Aziz bin Nasir Al Shamsi, signed the agreement for the UAE, while the Antigua and Barbuda's Permanent Ambassador to the UN, John W. Ashe, also signed for his side in a short ceremony held here at the UN headquarters. The Permanent Secretary of the Foreign Ministry of Antigua and Barbuda, Colin Murdoch, was present at the signing ceremony.

The joint statement, which was placed at the UN in Arabic and English, expressed the desire of the governments of the two countries to boost understanding and relations of friendship and cooperation between the peoples of the two countries on the basis of UN Charter and principles, and international laws on mutual respect, global peace and security, equality among nations, sovereignty, independence, territorial integrity and lack of interference in the internal affairs of other nations.

The statement said the relations have been established at the ambassadorial level in accordance with the Vienna Accord on diplomatic ties.

Soon after signing the agreement, the two ambassadors discussed joint relations between their countries. They said the signing of the agreement was a major step towards boosting of those relations, particularly in the political, economic, trade and cultural areas. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
