UAE expresses concern at Israeli violations of treaties

New York - The United Arab Emirates has expressed its deep concern at the continued Israeli violations of Geneva conventions and protocols on the protection of victims of armed conflicts.

"The United Arab Emirates, which attaches great importance to States' respect for the provisions of the four Geneva conventions and the Additional Protocols relating to the protection of victims of armed conflicts, expresses its deep concern at the continued violations of Israel to its obligations under these conventions and protocols, both inside the Palestinian and Arab territories occupied since 1967 and in its recent war in the region," said Saeed Rashed Sultan Elwan Al-Hebsi, Member of the UAE delegation before the Sixth Committee/UN on agenda Item entitled "Status of the Protocols Additional to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and Relating to the Protection of Victims of Armed Conflicts."

He touted as shameful the Israeli acts against the people of Gaza Strip, saying these violations could have been prevented had the international community taken, in an earlier stage, a series of preventive measures for deterring such policies.

The UAE further called on the international community to shoulder its responsibilities and stop Israel's grave violations to the international conventions.

"We believe that the continued international tolerance for Israel's repeated aggressions against the Arab peoples will reduce the credibility and universality of these noble conventions.

Therefore, we emphasize the need to track down the perpetrators of war crimes and violations of Geneva conventions and their protocols in order to bring them to justice and ensure their responsibility for the payment of compensation for the material and moral damages to the people who suffered as a result of their acts,' Al Hebsi stressed.
