UAE expresses grave concern over Security Council's failure to adopt Palestinian statehood resolution

NEW YORK: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has expressed grave concern over the UN Security Council's failure to adopt the Arab group's Palestinian statehood resolution that set a time frame for ending the Israeli occupation of the Palestinian territories.

In a statement, the Permanent Representative of the UAE to the United Nations, Ambassador Lana Nusseibeh, said, "Through its rejection of the resolution, the Security Council has failed in its responsibility of preserving peace and security in the region and protracts an unjust occupation which breaches international resolutions adopted by the UN Security Council itself, exacerbating the decades-long suffering of the Palestinian people." This failure, Nusseibeh added, coincides with the lack of a political process and Israel's continuing intransigence and policies aimed at undermining the two-state solution through the systematic building of settlements in the occupied Palestinian territories (oPt).

The UAE Permanent Representative also emphasised that the UAE sincerely believes in the urgent need to develop a solution to the Palestinian issue as soon as possible within the framework of UN Security Council resolutions, and that the vote against ending the occupation represents a drawback that perpetuates Israel's unlawful occupation of Palestinian land and their daily systematic violations against the Palestinian people. – Emirates News Agency, WAM - http://www.wam.ae/en/news/emirates/1395274585423.html
