To mark the 31st anniversary of the UAE National Day, the Zayed Centre for Co-ordination and Follow-up has published its latest book "The UAE First Arab Experiment in Union" to share people's happiness and pride in their achievements.

The study points out that it was not only the first Arab attempt at union, that grew and became stronger despite all the odds and obstacles it encountered last three decades since its inception in 1971, but it is also considered a living Arab model of unity that proves the possibility of achieving the Arab aspirations of uniting the whole Arab Nation that has all the necessary ingredients like common language religion, common interest history and common aims and destiny, according to a report in "The Gulf Today.”

The study surveys the arduous path that this experiment has undergone since its birth when it was just a mere idea conceived by President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan and his brothers, Rulers of other Emirates. It resisted all the difficulties and managed to overcome the hurdles to become a reality in 1971 at a time when many were sceptic about its success.

The study presents historical review of the Gulf region in general and the emirates in particular during the past there centuries since the British intervention in the affairs of the emirates with the establishment of East India Company in 1763 and the subsequent British attack in 1819 that resulted in armed conflict with the Arabs.

It also covers the period during the Ottoman Empire's reign in 1871 and the British Trucial Treaty with the rulers of the emirates in 1892 that strengthened the British influence along the trucial coast, giving autonomy to the emirates to administer their internal affairs, while Britain took the responsibility of foreign affairs. The Americans emerged in the Gulf region through missionaries in 1890.

The era of granting oil concessions began in the early 20th century. The second part of the book reviews the unity attempts of some Arab countries that started after the World War I, followed by the Fertile Crescent in Iraq in 1942 and the greater Syrian project in 1947.

Then came the idea of establishing the Arab League as a form of gathering and the Arab union. In addition to the above, a number of Arab countries like Egypt and Syria (1958), Iraq and Syria (1963), Egypt, Libya and Sudan (1969) and Egypt, Libya, Syria (1971-1978) and Gulf Co-operation Council in 1980 and Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia (1989) worked to form unions, which either failed or still survive on papers.

The study analyses the basics dimensions of the UAE's experiment and discusses the democratic dimensions of this experiment which is embodied in the constitution of the UAE that reflects the maturity of this experiment.

The study also touches upon the political dimensions of this experiment with regard to domestic Arab, Islamic and international policies and relations. The UAE has succeeded in establishing its relations with the rest of the world on the basis of international law and human principles. With the guidance of Sheikh Zayed, the UAE built bridges of co-operation and friendship with various countries within the framework of tolerance, co-operation and commitment to the sublime values of civilisation and in accordance with the principles enshrined in the UN charter.
