New York - The UAE government Monday lodged with the UN a document of its official accession to the Convention for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts Against the Safety of Maritime Navigation and the Protocol for the Suppression of Unlawful Acts against the Safety of Fixed Platforms Located on the Continental Shelf.

Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, UAE's Permanent Representative to the UN, filed the lodgement request of the document as signed by Rashid Abdullah, Foreign Minister, via a letter to Kofi Anan, UN Secretary General. The UAE has expressed in the document its reservation as regards Article (1), 1st para, of the Convention pertinent to settlement of disputes between the signatory countries through arbitration or, in the event of disagreement, referral of the same to the International Court of Justice. It has also voiced reservation for 1st Para of the Protocol. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
