UAE for Palestinian bid for UN membership

posted on 26/10/2011: 921 views

New York - The UAE yesterday threw its weight behind a Palestinian bid to gain full-fledged UN membership and called the UN Security Council to reach an international consensus to issue an immediate resolution recommending the UN General Assembly to accept the request in conformity with positions of most countries which official recognised the Palestinian independent state in accordance with 4 June 1967 borders.

Ahmed Al-Jarman, Permanent Representative of the UAE at the UN, told the regular monthly meeting of the UNSC yesterday on the Middle East that :' The UAE backs this historic bid by the Palestinian people especially after the Palestinian Authority has fulfilled its commitment to building state institutions as recognised by the Middle East Quartet and other international relevant organisations.

'Acceptance of Palestine as a full UN member doesn't means in any way closing the door before continuation of Palestinian-Israeli- peace negotiations rather it will be another building block in ongoing efforts to resume peace talks shortly,' he added. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
