The UAE yesterday called for a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction and stressed the need to defuse tensions in the Gulf region, WAM news agency said. The UAE position was conveyed to an Iranian envoy who was received here by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Later, His Highness Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, received the Iranian official, Deputy Foreign Minister Mahdi Mustafawi, in Dubai.

Mustafawi, who is on a regional tour, briefed the UAE leaders on his country's ongoing negotiations with the international community over its nuclear programme, which has raised strong objections.

Sheikh Khalifa, during the meeting with the Iranian official in the presence of General Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, stressed "the UAE's keenness to achieve security, stability and a just, comprehensive and lasting peace in the region, as well as to defuse tensions in the Middle East, especially in the Arabian Gulf," WAM said.

The President also urged support for development efforts that would achieve progress and prosperity for the peoples of the region. Mustafawi delivered a letter to Sheikh Khalifa from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressing bilateral relations and issues of common interest. The envoy also conveyed to Sheikh Khalifa greetings and wishes of good health and more progress and prosperity for the UAE people. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
