UAE for enhancing NAM's role

Havana - The United Arab Emirates has called for a central role of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in the current world order. To revive the movement's global role, NAM members should be committed to key issues, including respect for other countries' sovereignty, non interference in other countries' internal affairs and peaceful settlement of disputes.

"NAM members should take drastic steps to cope with the changes and to wisely contain them in a way that will maintain the movement's basic principles and for achieving its objectives of development, security and stability," said Dr Tariq Ahmed Al Haidan, Foreign Ministry's Assistant Under Secretary for Political Affairs in a statement read before a meeting of the NAM Foreign Ministers in Havana last Thursday.

UAE also proposed steps to encourage synergies between countries of the south, to dedicate resources for sustainable development and to show solidarity with people of occupied territories, by endorsing their right to self determination.

Al Haidan congratulated Cuba on assuming presidency of NAM for this session. "Since the past 45 years, the world has seen dramatic changes. Following the end of the cold war, the international decision making has become almost unilateral and polarization has picked up pace in an economic environment that is mired in injustice and unfairness," Al Haidan added.
