UAE government takes steps to tackle corruption and red tape

The UAE government is stepping up its efforts to curb corruption and red tape by eliminating excessive bureaucracy and developing the role of the State Audit Institution (SAI), a top official announced on Wednesday.

SAI is the external audit authority for all federal government departments and government-owned companies such as etisalat and du, and has the mandate to supervise and monitor these entities.

"The government campaign reinforces the key role of SAI in improving public sector governance," Dr Hareb Al Amimi, SAI's president, told Gulf News.

"SAI is an independent body which reports on its work directly to the Federal National Council (FNC), and it plays an important governance and oversight role for the federal government," he added.

Apart from enhancing its financial auditing, Al Amimi said SAI would soon be introducing performance auditing to examine the management of federal government organisations and programmes to identify whether they are being carried out in an efficient, effective and economic manner, and whether management practices promote improvement.

Although conducted in some other countries, this type of audit has not previously been conducted in the federal government of the UAE. – Gulf News
