UAE grand relief mission for Darfur begins

Nyala, Darfur - The UAE grand relief mission for Darfur began yesterday with the arrival of two aircrafts carrying 5,000 tents for the displaced persons in Darfur. The UAE relief mission for Darfur was ordered by President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, and is being conducted under the direct supervision of Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA).

The two planes were received upon arrival by Khamis Mohammed Al Suweidi, Director of the RCA in Sharjah and Abdul Aziz Al Mahmoud, UAE Charge D'Affaires.

Ali Mahmoud, Governor of South Darfur and members of his cabinet were also present.

Speaking to WAM, South Darfur Governor said the UAE relief mission was the first ever Arab initiate since the outbreak of the conflict in Darfur. The governor extended thanks to the UAE leadership, noting that the UAE has long supported the Sudanese people on various occasions.

For his part, the head of RCA delegation in Sudan said the relief operations will be two-fold, with one part being directed to floods victims while the second part will be devoted to the displaced persons in Darfur states.

He added that some 13 relief planes will fly to Darfur with the coming few weeks. A vessel carrying 4o tonnes of relief supplies is on its way to Port Sudan.

Meanwhile, the Sudanese community in the UAE has expressed appreciation for grand UAE relief mission for Sudan.

Omar Yousef Al Degeir, Secretary General of the Sudanese Social and Cultural Centre said the community was grateful for the aid extended to floods victims as well as the displaced persons in Darfur. He said the Sudanese centre has set up a national committee to coordinate relief efforts for the floods victims. The committee will hold its first meeting on Saturday 28th.
