Stockholm - United Arab Emirates has hailed the efforts of Iraqi government for its efforts for restoring security and stability in the country, and for committing itself to the disarmament of militias and various outlawed groups. UAE also praised the keenness of the Iraqi government for setting up a national Iraqi military and Police for realising peace and security in the country and protecting its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In a speech delivered at the first follow-up conference of the International Convention with Iraq held in Stockholm, Assistant Undersecretary of UAE's Foreign Ministry for Political Affairs Dr. Tariq Ahmed Al Haidan also expressed hope that peace and security will return soon to the soil of Iraq.

The conference organised by Sweden under auspices of the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki was aimed at strengthening the role of the international community in Iraq. Some 100 delegations took part in the one-day conference in the Swedish capital and was attended by UAE's delegation headed by Al Haidan. The International Covenant with Iraq (ICI), a five-year peace and economic development plan, was adopted earlier in Egypt in May 2007.

Al Haidan expressed hope that the conference will play an important role in encouraging the international community for rebuilding Iraq. He noted that UAE has given a total of USD 100mn in aid to Iraq, including aUS$ 10million grant from President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan to help support the Commissariat for Iraqi refugees' affairs. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
