The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has actively engaged in enforcing the United Nations Security Council resolutions 1970 and 1973 which call on the international community to accelerate and boost efforts to bring about stability and security in Libya, UAE Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan affirmed on Thursday.

In a keynote address to the third meeting of the Libya Contact Group hosted by the UAE on Thursday, Sheikh Abdullah stressed the vital importance of territorial integrity of Libya, underscoring that the Arab role in supporting the Libya people remains important and central.

'We are seeking to keep that role prominent and reflective of the fraternal solidarity with our brethren in Libya,' Sheikh Abdullah told the gathering of over 20 foreign ministers and representatives of regional and international organisations attending the meeting, including the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and NATO.

'Day, weeks and months have proven that the Transitional National Council is the representative of the Libyan people and the voice that expresses their aspirations for a bright tomorrow. We hail the Council's efforts to bring all areas under the consensus towards a new, united Libya looking forward confidently to the future. It is no secret that the Council is in a desperate need for more support from its international partners politically and economically,' the UAE foreign minister said.

As he thanked Doha and Italy for hosting the previous meetings, Sheikh Abdullah said he was confident that the Abu Dhabi meeting would even deliver significant progress building on what had been agreed upon in the first and second meetings.

The Doha and Rome meetings, he explained, had demonstrated deep multilateral cooperation among the supporters of Libya and their commitment to standing beside the Libyan people by helping them survive these circumstances in order to achieve, at the end of the day, their legitimate ambitions .

'The collective effort in our handling the situation in Libya forms a true commitment from the side of the international community towards the Libyan people and expresses the iron will to protect them through the ongoing NATO operations in collaboration with the friendly nations for protection of civilians.

Sheikh Abdullah noted that the Abu Dhabi meeting had made an important breakthrough in removing obstacles or some of them which hinder the temporary financial mechanism to enter into force.

'The financial mechanism is now ready to receive financial commitments from countries,' he said.

According to Sheikh Abdullah, the meeting provides an important and necessary opportunity to all of us to express and share views on developments in post- Qaddafi Libya in line with a safe and effective mechanism provide that this should be done through reliable and methodological collective action through which a new Libya that is active in its regional and international ambience would emerge. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
