Islamabad - UAE has always been a generous supporter of Pakistan and the Pakistani people and same was the situation during the recent floods that destroyed the lives of millions of Pakistanis, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) Nadeem Ahmad, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), has said.

'UAE was among the first nations to come forth and support us in our operations to coordinate the flood relief effort and the assistance of all kinds came flowing from the people and government of UAE. The people of Pakistan are grateful for the assistance and support that they have received from their brethren in UAE and feel that the response has been timely and appropriate to the fittest fashion, Ahmad said in an interview with WAM on the occasion of the UAE's national day.

'UAE has been among the frontrunners to provide necessary assistance to Pakistan and has provided millions of dollars along with experts and specialists to help the Pakistan brethren. It quickly dispatched three Chinook helicopters, 16,000 tents, 250 tons of dates along with 42 UAE Army Officers in addition to the two medical teams which have been deployed in Sindh where they have rendered exceptional services to the people of Pakistan.

'The Government of Pakistan has prioritized a total of twelve areas that cover nearly all the spectrum of the development needed to rebuild Pakistan. On the top of these areas is the food security for which a total of US$ 573.2 million are required.

'Indeed, UAE has shown tremendous amount of growth and development in nearly all areas of nation building and I am proud to say that Pakistanis have played an important role in this nation building. UAE is like another home for Pakistanis and that, by default, makes UAE an extended family to us. I think, there are great lessons to learn from the UAE model of construction, infrastructure development, tourism promotion and a total economic rehabilitation on the lines of modern practices. The government, organizations and people of UAE can immensely help in providing necessary assistance to Pakistan to rebuild all that has been lost.

He added 'The professional level of the UAE-based organizations that came to Pakistan right after the flood is commendable and they have merged seamlessly in the post-floods operation and still are working efficiently.

Asked if there are special projects to be financed by the UAE government or its different organizations, he said 'I must say that the people and the government of UAE have contributed generously in situation during and after the flood and I hope this cooperation would continue in future also. We are, at the moment, still in the relief and early recovery phase after the flood and reconstruction and rehabilitation phases would follow.

'Floods have destroyed most of the infrastructure in the affected districts along with severely challenging the livelihood of millions associated with agriculture.

In addition, millions have lost their homes and are now without shelter with very little or no food security. Now, these are the areas which are on our priority list where brotherly nations like UAE can help immensely.

'UAE has helped us in the past and we have been able to forge an extremely cordial working relationship with the public, private and non-government sector organizations from UAE. In the early recovery, reconstruction and then rehabilitation phase, we understand that UAE can do much to help building back a better Pakistan,' he indicated. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
