The UAE has carved a niche as a leader in the global exhibitions industry, according to journalists covering the 8th edition of the Abu Dhabi International Defence Exhibition (IDEX 2007) which is winding up here Thursday.

Virtually all international journalists quizzed by WAM hailed the biennial exhibition as "successful and well-organised", adding that the show stands as an irrefutable testimony to UAE's acclaim as a global leader in the exhibition's industry. They also hailed the start-of-the-art facilities offered by the organisers for the exhibitors, visitors and representatives of the world's media.

"The facilities provided to the world media are excellent and we have received a very good cooperation from the UAE media outlets notably WAM, Emirates media and many others", said Sabit Amin of the Egyptian Al Ahram Arabic daily.

Bassem Al Ghafili, Correspondent of the Iraqi TV said the new Media Centre at IDEX served as a real asset and was resourceful in easing his job.

"This exhibition is quite large. If anything, it shows the strong surge and interest in defence procurements", remarks Nathan Hodge of Jane's Defence magazine.

Hodge added that the exhibition itself is for the companies but as a journalist, he said, he found the Gulf Conference as extremely useful because it served as a forum to share different perspectives on different defence issues.

"The conference was really good because it provided an invaluable opportunity to get various perspectives about defence issues", he said.

The IDEX exhibition and conference has also been an opportunity to meet colleagues from other media organisations such as the BCC, Al Gezeera and many others so as to share their perspective.

Alain Servaes, Chief Editor of the Belgian-based Army Recognition Magazine said he had covered three editions of IDEX and this edition was well-organized.

Servaes also hailed the facilities availed to the press.

Geoff Russell , Communications Manager of Agusta Westland lauded the media facilities, saying they were state-of-the and were invaluable.

"There is plenty of space in the media centre and the setting is good.

I think IDEX is well organized".

IDEX 2007 was inaugurated on Sunday by President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. The event is being covered by around 800 journalists from around the world. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
