The United Arab Emirates has highlighted its high level of achievements in the area of girls' education at all stages, saying that this has contributed to the advancement of women's active participation in various sectors of national enterprise.

Dr. Moza Al-Shehhi, the UAE's representative to the UN Women's Empowerment entity, yesterday highlighted the UAE leadership's awareness of the importance of women's education as one of the their basic rights and one of the main requirements aimed at achieving full participation in the overall national development of the country.

Speaking at the second roundtable held on the sidelines of the 58th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, she said that the education sector in the UAE tops the list of social development projects in the approved 2014/2016 budget, noting that the funds allocated to this sector amounted to 21 percent of the total budget.

Dr. Al-Shehhi cited the results of the National Bureau of Statistics' report, which indicated that the proportion of females in tertiary education reached about 144.1 per cent for the academic year 2010 compared to 1990, and is one of the highest in the world.

She confirmed the keenness of the UAE to promote education and digital literacy in particular as the biggest challenge in a crucial stage for development based on information and communications technology.

In conclusion, Dr. Al-Shehhi stressed the country's determination to continue its efforts to promote the empowerment of women in various national sectors in the country. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
