New York - The UAE yesterday signed the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime - known as the Palermo Convention. UAE Permanent ambassador to the UN Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi signed the document on behalf of Foreign Minister Rashid Abdullah. The UAE became the 145th state to sign the agreement out of the total UN membership of 190 states. The Convention was adopted by resolution 25 of 15 November 2000, at the fifty-fifth session of the General Assembly of the United Nations. The convention is a powerful weapon in combating the plight. The treaty will help overcome bureaucratic inertia and different judicial systems, laws and regulations which stand in the way of better cooperation among law enforcement bodies.

The Palermo Convention, which was opened for signature following a high-level diplomatic Conference in Palermo (12-15 December 2000), represents the first attempt of the international community to devise a comprehensive response to the challenges of transnational organized crime. As such, not only does it address traditional issues of inter-State cooperation, but also identifies new and more effective prevention and law enforcement measures. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
