Mogadishu - The United Arab Emirates stepped up its relief operations and medical programs to alleviate the sufferings of the displaced people living in makeshift camps in the Somali capital Mogadishu.

The Emirati relief team dispatched yesterday a mobile clinic to the 'Salija' refugee camp, north of Mogadishu where more than twenty thousand Somalis suffering from malnutrition, most of them women and children, are sheltered.

UAE's efforts are directed to reduce repercussions of the current humanitarian crisis in Somalia and the relief team is working in various ways to avert the threat of famine and the consequent malnutrition. The efforts come in line with the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan to do everything possible to help the victims to survive.

Thousands of mothers carrying their children are walking several miles to refugee camps set up by relief agencies to find cooked food.

The UAE's relief operations includes distribution of essential food supplies and medical aid to save children suffering from life threatening diseases. The efforts are reinforced on a daily basis upon directives of Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and followed up by Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of UAE Armed Forces His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and HH Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of UAE Red Crescent.
