The UAE under the leadership of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan is contributing significantly to international efforts to fight hunger and alleviate severity of poverty around the world, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Ruler's Representative in the Western Region and Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RCA) said on Thursday.

'Initiatives adopted by the UAE aim at securing food to those need it and provide all means of living to millions of peoples who experience severe hunger and its tragic consequences,' Sheikh Hamdan said in a statement on the occasion of the World Food Day which falls on 16th October.

The UAE, he affirmed, is playing a vital role in improving living and preserving dignity of humanity across the world through establishing development projects in the most poor countries that enable the vulnerable categories to endure their difficult circumstances by providing them with basic living requirement especially food as the key defence line against ills, epidemics, homelessness and deprivation.

Sheikh Hamdan termed hunger as the main threat towards achievements of the Millennium Developments Goals (MDGs) whose main targets include halving the number of hungry peoples by 2015.

'The UAE will back the world family to realise these goals through execution of programs and launching initiatives that roll back hunger and boost international partnership seeking to assist developing countries to achieve MDGs as soon as possible,' Sheikh Hamdan emphasised.

'Eliminating hunger and realising food security are considered important factors for prevalence of international security and peace.

The UAE is striving to address repercussions of food shortage and price hikes which affect the lives of more than 900 million peoples worldwide,' he noted.

According to him, current humanitarian challenges require broader international cooperation and activation of partnership among international community institutions and organisations and active forces to deliver food which is a basic right to every individual.

He called for fostering values and principles as well as UN conventions agreed upon by the international community for saving life and preserving human dignity.

'It is high time for mobilising efforts and energies to respond to crises and develop effective solution and alternative plans to fill gaps generated by the world food and financial crises,' he added.

Sheikh Hamdan highlighted the massive programmes launched by the RCA to address the food shortage in flash points and conflict-ridden regions.

'The RCA has never been absent from the theatre of events in areas facing food shortage mainly in the African and Asian continents. The RCA has been there since early time and is still working actively to ease suffering of affected population and improve their living conditions,' he added.

Sheikh Hamdan indicated the RCA constructive partnerships with the UN humanitarian agencies like the FAO and WFP had made remarkable difference in the standard of services to victims of poverty and hunger worldwide.

'The RCA will steam ahead with its partnerships with UN agencies to deliver better future and care to victims of disasters and crises. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
