UAE is determined to reduce carbon footprint : Hamli posted on 23/04/2009
The UAE is determined to take measures to reduce carbon footprint and secure a sustainable future, H.E. Mohammed bin Dhaen Al Hamili, Minister of Energy, affirmed yesterday.
'The UAE's commitment to the environment is not new. More than 20 years ago, ADNOC declared a zero-flare policy at a time when virtually every oilfield in the world was flaring associated gas. The UAE, through Masdar Initiative, has shown that it is determined to take a massive forward to assume global leadership in renewable energies. The aim is not just reduce carbon emissions at home but to play a leading role in the development of sustainable new energy technologies, the minister said while addressing a ceremony at the Petroleum Institute to mark the Earth Day.
'The creation of Masdar City, the world's first carbon-neutral, zero waste city, will put Abu Dhabi on the world map as the first truly green city, he added.
'The framework agreement signed earlier this year between Masdar and ADNOC to reduce carbon emissions from Abu Dhabi's oil and gas facilities and monetising the emission reduction under the Kyoto Protocol's Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) shows how different institutions in the UAE can work together to achieve the ultimate goal of vastly reduced carbon emissions,' he noted.
'The challenge of global warming facing us today calls for a joint approach : multilateralism, not isolation, a message that I strongly affirm today. This will be vital for the future survival of mankind and for the realisation of continued worldwide economic growth and the elimination of global poverty. After all, a global problem demands global solution,' he remarked.
'Today, we see the world increasingly united in striving towards the common goal of energy security, sustainable development and a clean environment. In particular, the global community, including the UAE, is firmly committed to the development of renewable energies. The decision in January to create the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) shows the determination to work together for the long term benefit of the planet and its environment.
To date more than 76 countries have signed the Statute of the Agency, among them the UAE,' he added.
'The UAE is competing to host IRENA headquarters in Masdar City, Abu Dhabi,' he concluded. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
