Deputy Prime Minister, H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed al Nahyan, has said that the escalation of refugee issue worldwide poses a great challenge to the international community, humanitarian organisations and other philanthropic forces.

Sheikh Hamdan, who is also the Chairman of the UAE Red Crescent Authority (RSA) made the statement in his address on the occasion of the World Refugee Day. He said the UAE continued to play a great role to help minimise the causes of that situation and to alleviate the sufferings of refugees, adding that the UAE is also one of the major supporters of refugees worldwide, thanks to the directives and assistance of President H.H. sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai, H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, H.H. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

He pointed out that the UAE had, from early stage, realised the dangers posed to the world by the situation of the refugees that was why the country began to work on two tracks - the first being working to prevent the occurrence of the causes of this situation by promoting the culture of peace, tolerance, peaceful coexistence, listening to the sense of reasons and wisdom in conflicts among peoples and nipping troubles in the bud, while the second track includes the UAE's handling of refugee issue as a serious and painful one that some millions of people worldwide are being forced to experience. "That is why the UAE continues to provide humanitarian support, execute development programmes to help alleviate the sufferings of those weak and innocent people," he added.

He expressed grave concern on the situation of refugees worldwide. "What these refugees are facing worldwide as a result of their exceptional situation requires a concerted effort of the international community and the boosting of partnership among humanitarian organisations to try to improve their situation and to bring to the fore their emergency cases," Sheikh Hamdan said and cited the situation of the Iraqi and Palestinian refugees, who the UAE continues to reach out to through a number of programmes and initiatives. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
