Geneva - The United Arab Emirates has joined the Geneva Declaration on Armed Violence and Development (GD), taking part in its Review Conference 2011 which was held between 31 October and 1 November.

The UAE delegation to the conference was headed by Faris Mohammed Al Mazrouei, Assistant foreign Minister for Security and Military Affairs.

In a speech he gave during the conference, Al Mazrouei said UAE's decision to join the GD was a testimony to the country's commitment to countering impact and reasons of armed violence.

He said the UAE foreign policy is based on peaceful co-existence, mutual understanding, non interference in other countries' internal affairs and a firm belief in peaceful solution to conflicts.

He also highlighted UAE's active participation in the UN and other international organisations' peacekeeping, humanitarian and developmental efforts in the countries that suffer armed conflicts or natural calamities, citing the aid it gives to Afghanistan which reached Dh1.2 billion in 2009, of which, over 863 million was allocated for reconstruction efforts.

The GD is a diplomatic initiative aimed at addressing the interrelations between armed violence and development. It was first adopted by 42 states on 7 June 2006 during a Ministerial Summit in Geneva, to which the Swiss government and UNDP invited high-level representatives from ministries of foreign affairs and development agencies. It is now endorsed by over 112 states. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
