The United Arab Emirates has become a member of the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice, a subsidiary body of the UN's Economic and Social Council. Mohammed bin Nakhira Al Dhaheri, Minister of Justice, said in a statement released yesterday that the UAE, under the wise leadership of President H.H. Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, is keen on respecting principles of human rights and fundamental freedoms in all crime prevention and criminal justice procedure.

He added that the country has been actively participating in formulating international anti-crime, counter-terrorism and criminal justice policies. Established in 1992, the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice formulates international policies and recommends activities in the field of crime control. The 40-member Commission offers nations a forum for exchanging information and to settle on ways to fight crime on a global level. It also provides substantive direction for the periodic UN Congresses on the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
