The United Arab Emirates has been elected as a member of the UNESCO's World Heritage Committee (WHC). This came during the extraordinary general assembly of the 24 countries which are parties to the international convention to safeguard intangible cultural heritage, held last Thursday in Paris. The UAE was elected as a full member of the committee for 4 years while Syria and Algeria respectively won a two-year temporary provisional membership.
Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of Abu Dhabi Culture and Heritage Authority praised the efforts made by the cultural bodies in the UAE and the country's embassy in Paris to secure a permanent seat in the committee.
"The selection of UAE as member of that UNESCO's specialised committee to represent Arab countries reflects the country's prestigious position at international forums and a recognition of its efforts towards safeguarding of cultural heritage," he said. (Emirates News Agency, WAM)
