The UAE won a historic bronze medal in the boxing competition at the 10th Pan Arab Games yesterday. Abu Dhabi fighter Ali Khalfan Ali secured the medal despite losing to his Iraqi opponent Seraga Sabih Mehdi in the 57kg weight category. Mehdi progressed to the final after the referee stopped the contest in the second round. This is the first time that the UAE has won any medal in international boxing.
Sheikh Hamed Bin Khadim Bin Butti Al Hamed, President of the UAE Boxing Association, hailed Ali's success. "This is a great moment for us and we want to dedicate this first ever medal for the UAE to President His Highness Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan." (The Gulf News)
