UAE needs no mediation on monetary union decision

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs H.E. Dr Anwar Mohammed Gargash has affirmed that the UAE needs no mediation with fellow GCC countries over its decision to withdraw from the Gulf monetary union.

Gargash was quoted yesterday by the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) as saying the UAE was an active Gulf state that supported the GCC and had open communication channels with other member states. "Having different views on some issues is a normal matter," he told KUNA.

The UAE withdrew from the agreement of unified Gulf currency because it was not chosen to host the headquarters of the Gulf central bank, although it had a great economic strength, not because Saudi Arabia was chosen to host the headquarters, he emphasized.

Gargash said the UAE still believes that it makes a perfect location for the GCC Central Bank "which would benefit a lot from the country's open banking environment.

"The UAE views that the procedures followed to select the location were not right. Therefore, it demanded, through an official memorandum, to halt discussions on the matter. The UAE opted not to raise the issue with brothers in order for them not to take a negative turn," he stated. – Emirates News Agency, WAM
