UAE notifies UN on breaking ties with Taliban

New York (WAM) The UAE has officially submitted to the United Nations notification of its recent decision to sever ties with the Taliban Government in Afghanistan. Abdul Aziz Al Shamisi, UAE Permanent Representative to the UN, last night forwarded two separate letters in this respect to Kofi Annan, UN Secretary General and this month's Chairman of the Security Council, the French Permanent Representative, in which he called on them to include the letters among the UN official documents.

In his two letters, Al Shamisi reiterated the statement made by an official source at the Foreign Ministry when announcing the decision to sever relations, in which he expressed the UAE's regret that the Taliban Government has disregarded pleas from the UAE and other countries to comply with the UN Security Council resolutions requiring them to hand over Osama bin Laden to stand trial.
