The UAE yesterday began extending urgent humanitarian assistance to Iraqis with special needs. In response to instructions by President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and Her highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the President's Wife and Chairwoman of the UAE General Women's Union, GWU, and the follow up of Lt. General Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Armed Forces Chief of Staff, the Emirates Taskforce for Reconstruction of Iraq set up yesterday field teams to assess the urgent needs of centres for elderly people, orphans and the handicapped which have suffered acute shortage of food and medical supplies and equipment.

Taskforce Commander Brigadier Obeid Al Kutbi said that he had toured these centres as soon as he received the instructions. 'Immediately after the field teams have finished their tours and assessed the needs of these centres, we offered generators, air-conditioners and medical and food assistance. Maintenance work at these centre has also commenced,' he said, adding that work is expected be done within the coming days. (The Emirates News Agency, WAM)
