The UAE yesterday said that a plane carrying relief supplies and a team from the RedCrescent Society, RCS, will fly tomorrow to Iran's Kerman airport as part of an airlift to provide emergency and relief aid to victims of the earthquake that devastated the city of Bam. The airlift was ordered by President H.H. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan for the quake victims.

Khalifa Nasir Al Suwaidi, RCS Board Chairman, affirmed the Society's rapid response to meet the necessary requirements for the plane's departure to Iran, noting the Society's deep concern of the tragic situation of the Bam area in the light of the disaster. He also re-iterated the Society's keen desire to provide all basic relief supplies such as tents, blankets, medicine and medical equipment and food parcels to meet the needs of the residents of the disaster hit area.

Suwaidi said that the Society was closely watching the unfolding humanitarian situation in Iran in terms of the loss of life and casualties and the extent of destruction in order to provide badly needed assistance to families of victims in co-ordination with the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescents and the Iranian Red Crescent.
