The UAE has pledged to establish a rehabilitation centre for handicapped children in Gaza Strip, as part of its constant supportive plan for the Palestinian people suffering under the Israeli occupation. The decision was taken by Matar Humaid Al Tayer, Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, who led the UAE's delegation to Cairo to attend the meetings of the 22nd round of the Arab Council of Social Affairs Ministers.

The Council had earlier formed a committee as per decision No. 393 for 2000 at the 20th round of its meetings in Cairo, in order to study the possibility of establishing two handicapped rehabilitation centres for Palestinian children in the Occupied Territories, after the outbreak of the Palestinian Intifada. The Committee included the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Egypt, Palestinian Permanent Representative at the Arab League in Cairo and Assistant Secretary General of the Arab League.

The UAE pledged to set up one of the centres, as part of its continued supportive stance for the Palestinians, who have been suffering under continuous Israeli aggression. The UAE Red Crescent Authority also pledged to finance the charitable project and to supervise its implementation, while Sheikh Zayed Charitable and Humanitarian Foundation has pledged to get the centre fully equipped with all the necessary equipment.

Dubai Charitable Association donated $25,000 to support the project and Ajman Charitable Works Authority donated another $30,000 to fund the humanitarian project. (The Gulf News)
