Multan Airbase: UAE military personnel in their Chinook helicopters have rescued tens of thousands of people from the flood-affected areas of Pakistan.

"The arrival of UAE army personnel with three Chinook helicopters has given a big lift to rescue and relief operations in this area and we are grateful to the UAE Government for their timely help," said Lieutenant Colonel Nadeem Eslam Wednesday, while briefing a UAE media team at the Multan airbase in Pakistan.

The media team was flown to Pakistan to assess the scale of damage the massive floods have caused in southern Punjab.

Other projects

It was revealed during the aerial trip of the affected area that a 45-km wide and 125-km long area in south Punjab covering five districts along the River Indus and River Chenab has been submerged, leaving more than two million homeless and bringing economic activities to a halt.

The UAE chose to participate in the southern Punjab relief effort as it also has several other projects in the area.

The UAE Government is assessing the situation and is preparing to send follow-up teams for a second stage of operations which include recovery, reconstruction and rehabilitation, which according to rough estimates requires more than US$1 billion (Dh3.67 billion).
